Mage Spell Rotations(updated for 5.2)

This is a listing of the best rotations for mages to use to do high DPS. Rotations for mages are different depending on why mage tree you are focused on. Some of these trees with be priority based relying on proc's to determine what to cast. A lot of the rotation information found on the elitistjerks.com site under the mages forum. Those guys know their stuff.

The best rotations to cast for each class are as follows:

One thing to note before I start if you are using Invocation as your tier 5 talent be sure to use evocation just before you enter combat so you can take advantage of the 25% damage buff it provides at the start.

 

Arcane Mage Spell Rotation:

As an arcane mage you should always try to stay close to 100% mana but not not reach it.

 

Single target rotation.
Tier 5 talent (Nether Tempest, Living Bomb, or Frost Bomb) - Cast frost bomb on cooldown or for the other 2 make sure they are always up and refreshed just before they expire. If you refresh living bomb too fast you will not benifit from the explosion the goes off at the end of the spell.
Tier 6 talent (Rune of Power, Incanter's Ward or Invocation) - If you use RoP make sure it is always active, if you use IW then use it every time is off of cooldown, if you use Invocation then manage your mana so that you can cast this once every minute or so to take advantage of the 15% damage buff but make sure your mages mana does not go below 30%. If you have to cast this when you are moving and you have ice flows take advantage of that spell so you can channel this on the run.
Arcane Power - Cast when off of cooldown as well popping trinkets, if available cast Mirror Image and Alter Time when you do this to extend the timer of Arcane Power and trinkets.
Arcane Missiles - Cast it when it procs.
Arcane Barrage - Cast this when you have 4 to 6 stacks of Arcane Charge.
Arcane Blast - Use this to build up stacks of Arcane Charge.

 

Rotation for groups of 2-4 targets:
Living Bomb - Use Fire Blast and Glyph of Fire to spread the living bomb to other mobs.
Tier 6 talent (Rune of Power, Incanter's Ward or Invocation) - If you use RoP make sure it is always active, if you use IW then use it every time is off of cooldown, if you use Invocation then manage your mana so that you can cast this once every minute or so to take advantage of the 15% damage buff but make sure your mages mana does not go below 30%. If you have to cast this when you are moving and you have ice flows take advantage of that spell so you can channel this on the run.
Arcane Power - Cast when off of cooldown as well popping trinkets, if available cast Mirror Image and Alter Time when you do this to extend the timer of Arcane Power and trinkets.
Flamestrike - When off of cooldown
Arcane Missiles - Cast it when it procs.
Arcane Barrage - Cast this when you have 2-3 stacks of Arcane Charge.
Arcane Blast - Use this to build up stacks of Arcane Charge.

 

Rotation for groups of 5 or more:
Flamestrike – When off of cooldown
Frost Bomb
Arcane Explosion – Spam if you cannot do anything else.

 

Fire Mage Rotation:

Always use molten armor as a fire mage.

 

Single Target Rotation:

Alter Time - Cast when Pyroblast! procs if off of cooldown.
Pyroblast - Cast when Pyroblast! procs.
Combustion - If you land a big critical with Pyroblast.
Inferno Blast / Pyroblast - Cast when Heating Up procs if it is off cooldown.
Fireball – Cast as filler to to proc Heat Up and Pyroblast. If mana is an issue or if you have to cast on the move a lot I would recommend using this talent/spell.

 

Rotation for 2 - 4 Targets:
Living Bomb - Use Fire Blast and Glyph of Fire to spread the living bomb to other mobs.

Frost Mage Rotation:

As frost mage you have the ability to kite targets very effectively and have a lot of tools at your disposal. Use frost armor as your armor.

 

Single target rotation:

Tier 5 talent (Nether Tempest, Living Bomb, or Frost Bomb) - Cast frost bomb on cooldown or for the other 2 make sure they are always up and refreshed just before they expire.

Frostfire Bolt - Cast this when Brain Freeze procs.
Icey Veins - Cast whenever it is available along with other trinket cooldowns. ALter Time - Cast if you have just used Icey Veins and blown trinket cooldowns.
Ice Lance - Cast when there is charges of Fingers of Frost.
Frozen Orb - Cast every time it becomes available.
Water Elemental Freeze - Use this ability every time it is available.
Frostbolt - When nothing else is available.

 

Rotation for 2 - 4 Targets:

Icey Veins - Cast whenever it is available along with other trinket cooldowns. ALter Time - Cast if you have just used Icey Veins and blown trinket cooldowns.
Ice Lance - Cast when there is charges of Fingers of Frost. Also note that the Ice Lance glyph also hits one additional target for 40% damage so this can be valuable anytime you are fighting more than one target.
Frozen Orb - Cast every time it becomes available.
Water Elemental Freeze - Use this ability every time it is available.
Frostbolt - When nothing else is available.
